My philosophical approach to Psychotherapy

I see people as whole, even though they often do not feel that way when they come to see me, especially if they are suffering deeply. This is in contrast to CBT or the medical model that views people who are struggling emotionally as needing to be “fixed”.

I integrate 3 main philosophies and psychotherapy approaches into my work. These include Buddhist Psychology, Feminist Theory, and Gestalt Psychotherapy.

Mindfulness and Buddhist Psychology

Mindfulness and Buddhist Psychology is concerned with deepening your awareness:

Discovering more about your emotions, thoughts, and behaviours in relation to yourself; your relationships to others; and the world around you.

Gestalt Therapy

Gestalt psychotherapy holds that people intrinsically strive towards growth and balance in their lives.

It focuses on increasing your awareness of the “here and now” to facilitate a deeper understanding of yourself.

It looks at your past experiences as they relate to your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours in the present.

Feminist theory

Feminist theory acknowledges the social and cultural influences of people’s pain and suffering due to living in a world dominated by a philosophy of individualism and a model of having “power over” others.

Psychotherapy infused with a feminist perspective sees people as having equal worth regardless of their gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, or gender identity, etc.

My Psychotherapy Style

The above 3 theories and approaches underpin my work with my therapy clients. I weave them together in a way that best meets your unique needs to help foster your healing and growth.

Emotional wounds stem from a lack of love and connection in our lives. As a psychotherapist, my goal is to be caring and compassionate in the deepest way possible. I will honour you through every step in our work together. I will respect your pain and the decisions you make in order to feel more complete and whole.

Research shows that the quality of the relationship between therapist and client accounts for the success of therapy more than any other factor.

I place the utmost importance on connecting with you authentically, without judgment.

Our relationship will serve as a container in which you can grow towards feeling worthy of authentic connection, build your confidence, and become more comfortable within yourself. You will see that there’s nothing inherently wrong with you. Your suffering is not your fault, and you can heal and come to value yourself.

I will help you get in touch with what is interfering with your sense of being whole and worthy. If you struggle deeply in your life is likely because important parts of your being have been split off and suppressed to an extent where they cause you pain. My goal with you in therapy is to help you integrate the parts of yourself that are not being acknowledged and expressed.

For your convenience, I offer online therapy throughout the UK, as well as psychotherapy in Wakefield and Leeds.
